Department of Optometry and Visual Science, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in collaboration with Eye Clinic, Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) is organizing a 3 days Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Workshop. This workshop is the first ever to be conducted in East Coast region particularly Pahang.
The workshop module will incorporates both lectures and hands on methods of diabetic retinopathy screening using fundus camera. Lectures by the specialists in the field, it will cover both basics on diabetes and the clinical side of managing this pathology. Workshop will incorporate fundus grading in real life patients.
Participants will be awarded CPD points with certificate of participation at the end of the workshop. To keep the knowledge on, the modules in the session will be provided for each participant’s keep.
Together we eradicate blindness, promoting Optometrists as the primary eye care specialist.
From 1 st Day Workshop
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) can be divided into Non-Proliferative DR (NPDR), Proliferative DR (PDR), and advance diabetic eye disease (ADED) . NPDR can be classified into Mild, Moderate and Severe stage.
Mild sign is microaneurysm only.
Moderate NPDR signs are microaneurysm, hard exudate, retinal oedema, dot & blot hemorrhages, retinal hemorrhage in a few quadrants.
Severe NPDR signs are cotton wools spot, intraretinal microvascular anomalies (IRMA), beading venous, retinal oedema, dot and blot hemorrhages, retinal hemorrhage in most of quandrants.
PDR signs are new vessels formation at optic disc (neovascularization at optic disc <NVD>) or elsewhere on retina <NVE- neovascularization elsewhere>.
ADED signs are formation of fibrovascular tissue proliferation, tractional retinal detachment due to contraction of fibrovascular tissue, Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage . It may cause severe loss of vision.
