Let's Recap Hoya PALs Design

Let's explore and recap the Hoya PALs Design that are available in market now! For those who were visited Malaysian Hoya Lens Sdn Bhd Lab on 3rd January 2011, please help me to explain for each design.

Basically Hoya has 9 mainstream PALs design. There are GP, Wide, Summit Pro, Summit CD, Trueform SCD, Trueform STP, FD 11mm & FD 14 mm, ID 11mm & FD 14 mm and Trinity (12 designs) Specifically, they have 22 designs..


Please refer to pyramid diagram below for our discussion..
 

Hence, each of you must select one design (22 designs=22 students) to be explained via  comment section of this blog (on first come first serve basis). Azuwan, since he is the 'TAIKO', you are responsible to guide & correct them, (if any) for this session under my supervision.

Other readers (no matter are you from) are also invited to join  in this discussion & give your comment based on your prescribing experience or pt's experience wearing of any design of Hoya PALs. Through this exercise, hope that we will refresh, update and the most important is share our knowledge to the current PALs designs that available in industry. Let's spread our knowledge.

    -SUMMIT PRO-
    4 summit pro design, it is a spherical surface prescription and available in 1.7,1.67,1.67 SUntech & Transitions, 1.6, 1.6 Suntech & Transitions , 1.53 Transitions , 1.5 and 1.5 Transitions,which is same with summit CD. it has 8 base curves and 15 Addition power. the corridor length 4 this PAL is 14mm. Distance between distance and Near Eye Point is what corridor is.Each corridor( 11mm and 14mm) has their own Corridor Type Fitting Criteria.

  2. Oke, now i will explain about the FD design.

    It is a newly developed 'Back Surface Design'that combine with iD Freeform Design Technology. This type of PAL design is a semi-finished type lens which the front surface of the lens having a uniform +3.00DS.

    The plus add power will be counterbalanced by the minus add power at the back surface of the lens.

    FD has two corridor length which are 11mm and 14mm. The meaning of corridor length is already explained by Raja Nor Shahila. =)

    It is available in 1.5, 1.53, 1.6, 1.67 both in Clear and Suntech and Transitions.

    i will share some info about HOYALUX iD ( integrates Double Surface Progressive Design) that being first released in 2003. its a new Ergonomic Inset Design and.
    provide personal inset: 0 to 6mm
    and corridor length : 11mm & 14mm
    we also can specify our own Add Power.
    Index available : 1.53, 1.60, 1.67 ( both in Clear and Suntech and 1.7 (Clear only)

    Design feature for Hoyalux iD
    -combining iD FreeForm design Technology with Advance Back Surface Design.
    -integrates Double Surface Progressive Design means :
    ~there are Horizontal progressive component on back surface (near to the eye) for wider visual field view
    ~Vertical progressive component in front surface ( further from the eye)allow short interaction between far and near for a better comfort.

    Difference from FD:
    - FreeForm in back and front surface while FD only have FreeForm in backsurface and semi-finished at the front.
    -Id both side controlled surface structure while in FD only back surface controlled the surface structure.

    great info. Summit Pro is a kind soft design progressive as well. Soft design has greater intermediate viewing portion as compared to hard design. eg: hoya GP.

    Try this. Summit Pro is suitable for what kind of frame? Standard or small size?

    what about the minimum eye point,EP(also known as fitting height)for FD lens that has 14mm corridor? Can 14mm corridor be used for frame that has 30 mm height?

    corridor length is a distance measured from the optical cross(distance) to the near optical centre.

    salam..now i will explain to you about Hoyalux Summit CD. Summit CD is designed based on the free form technology which give the shortest progression zone at just 11 mm( corridor length). prior to this design, summit CD provide smooth, uninterrupted transition between the different fields of vision. summit CD which is using integrated view area concept gives intermediate and reading vision fully in balance to form one complete visual image. so, intermediate zone has a wide viewing area, creating a smooth transition from far to near. it comes in the 72 variable inset designs.Summit cd offers a complete near vision zone and recommended minimum fitting height of 14 mm. summit PRO and summit CD shared some similarities in terms of front curve design and both available in 1.5 in both and Clear and Transitions, 1.53, 1.6, 1.67 in both Clear, Suntech and Transitions, 1.6 in Misty Colour and 1.7 Clear

  11. Hoyalux Trinity...
    hoyalux Trinity is the new ergonomic inset design..inset is the distance from the center of Distance part to the center near part in the lens which help in converging and accomodation..the personal inset is from 0 to 6 mm..
    the Hoyalux Trinity design is available in 3 types which are Balance(balance distribution for both distance and near zone), mild( wider zone at near), and sharp( wider zone at distance)... the available refractive index are 1.74, 1.67 and 1.60...

  12. HOYA LUX Trinity
    To meet the demand of individual wearer who has different activities and routines. It has similar structure to HoyaLux iD/FD, but with addition of greater advantage of 3 main structures; M-type (Mild), B-type (Balance) & S-type (Sharp). M-type has special reading wide space, B-type has good balance for distance and near active vision, while S-type for sharpness of far vision. Distortion of space at the lens sides reduced greatly with the structure which is designed on Integrated Double Surfaces for the structures M, B or S. The index available: 1.60, 1.67, 1.74. The corridor size: 14mm & 11mm. Personal inset; 0-6mm. A patient’s need for the most suitable type of lens structure can be determined by a questionnaire conducted by an optician consists of characteristics of 21 functions of the users. This makes the evaluation of the most appropriate lens structure possible; thus the lens that will be received by the customer is considered special as TRINITY involves the technology of shaping lens with freeform integrated double surface designed specifically for individual.

  14. i will explain about the Hoyalux GP.Hoyalux GP is an easily adaptable basic progressive lens with good optics qualities which makes it comfortable when wearing.

    The wearer can regain the natural vision with comfortable feeling. The adaptation can be very fast and Intermediate distance is functioning well
    Improved binocular vision to the fullest possible extent through the whole range of the visual field

    Suitable for young Presbyopic and Late Presbyopic as a flexible design for outdoor usage.
    Hoyalux GP is a conventional design which has longer polishing time compared to freeform design.
    it has 14mm corridor type fitting criteria.

    - progressive intermediate corridor lens.
    - zone length: 23.5mm, 37% addition value at eye point.
    - Decentration intermediate: reading zone; 2.5mm.
    - maximum depth of vision: 400 cm.
    - 2 types of fitting: TACT 400 & 200.
    - order requirement: distance PD, distance prescription and Addition, dot of datum

    SALAM.
    I would like to share some information regarding to HOYALUX FD.
    HOYALUX FD was launched 3 years after HOYALUX iD.

    For the design features of HOYALUX FD, first, it is a design of combining iD FreeForm Design Technology with Advanced Back Surface Design.

    Second, the semi-finished front surface has been present to a uniform add of +3.00D.

    Third feature is the HOYALUX FD is improved with new ergonomic inset design.

    Fourth, it is available in 2 types of corridors which are 14mm and 11mm.

    In addition, the HOYALUX FD is available in 1.5, 1.53, 1.6, 1.67 both in Clear and Suntech and Transitions.

    For order requirements of HOYALUX FD, they are same with HOYALUX iD where the parameters needed in order form are:
    1. Addition Power (front, back or as worn)
    2. Corridor length (11mm-14mm)
    3. Working Distance (20-60cm)
    4.Submit complete order form with frame.
    5. Use box system to provide EP(eye point) measurement.

  19. since everybody else already discuss about the famous lens so i will discuss a litlle bit about hoya progressive lens lecture..
    Lecture is a reading lens with added value. It offers a large distortion free reading width in combinations with a three-dimensional variable depth of focus area.

    Lecture ideal for those who spend a considerable amount of time working on a computer and who would like an unimpeded reading area and a more than flexible wokring distance. This is also an excellent multifunctional lens for games, hobbies, music and specialist occupation.

    i just noticed that my topic is same with the topic that norhanani explained earlier :(

    so, here im going to share other information regarding to TACT.
    ajmal had share with us about TACT. but im going to explain detail on one of the two types of TACT which is TACT 400.

    in term of properties, TACT 400 has progressive intermediate corridor lens, zone length of 23.5mm with 37% addition value at Eye Point (EP). the maximum depth of vision for TACT 400 is 400cm.

    TACT 400 benefits the users as it is ideal for work space when reading up to 400cm, it helps patient in far vision, give wide intermediate zone, more relaxed and give variable depth vision.
    Besides, TACT 400 is a flexible office lens, provide depth and width vision without extra head movements. it is also very comfortable for reading task. in addition, it is ideal for senior computer users with high addition multifocal glasses. TQ

    Salam..
    I would like to explain from my understanding about HOYALUX wide

    Characteristics:
    -HOYALUX wide series is a step up series of HOYALUX GP
    -variable insets (max 3.4) on the reading area and wide design gives wearer up to 23% reading area than HOYALUX GP
    -not affecting the other characteristics of the lens
    -compensating for increase and decrease in consequence of varying in powers.
    -both eyes can work together so gives rise to better binocular vision and depth of vision
    -no negative side effects especially far vision part when reading is widened
    -short effective zone length of 14mm
    -accommodation deficits are compensate very effectively without need extra head movements

    Advantages:
    -comfortable smooth changes among far vision intermediate and reading areas
    -optimum freedom of movement in the far vision areas.
    -a wide, effective functional reading area which minimized compensating movements the head

    i choose for Hoyalux iD with the corridor length of 11mm which is the short corridor. this type of lens are suitable for an indoor person e.g people who use laptop and not really involve in sports or outdoor actvty..
    so for my other dear classmate u are welcome to make some review about Hoyalux iD 14mm..:)

    EYE POINT FITTING GUIDE FOR PROGRESSIVE LENSES..

    notes!!
    -Minimum 10mm from eye point to top part of the rim

    -Minimum Eye Point Fitting: 4mm from near eye point for both corridor types

    -Full Eye Point Fitting: 8mm from near eye point for both corridor types

    -Always use BOX system (from datum) for eye point fitting

    ADD POWER
    Add power is a special design for presbyopic patient. which is specialized for reading, computer and near work.

    Design Features for Addpower:
    1.Asymmetric single vision reading lens with a degression value of -0.75D

    2.Zone length 24mm

    3.Good for working distance between 30-80cm

  26. Salam. Since every design have been discussed, I would like to further explain about Summit CD which have been mentioned by Wani before. I will just focusing on Summit CD 1.5 (thus, the info is not so much)

    Summit CD 1.5 come in two forms:Clear and Transitions NG. Most of their features are same except that Transitions are photochromic (darken on exposure to UV, can function as sunglasses).

    The features of Summit CD 1.5 are as follows:
    - made from plastic
    - index is 1.5
    - AR coated and tintable
    - aspherical lens
    - a compact design for smaller frames
    - offers : i) a significant reduction in peripheral distortion. ii) the creation of an unprecedented wide progressive intermediate area iii) a rapid advancement of the addition power.
    - can be fitted with a minimum pupil height of 14mm

    Summit CD 1.5 is the shortest compact design multifocal on the market.

    Oh, bila TAIKO tanya soalan. Hehe.

    Oke, actually there is not much different in calculating the minimum eye point fitting for both the 11mm and 14mm corridor height.

    There are two important points here:

    1. A minimum of 10mm length must be added into the calculation. It is the point from eye point to top part of the rim.

    2. For minimum eye point fitting, a 4mm length is added. It is measured from the near eye point for both corridor types.

    So, The calculation is quite simple..

    Minimum EP = 14mm + 4mm + 10mm = 28mm.

    So, a 14mm corridor length can be used to fit a 30mm frame height.

    I do agree with Hani's answer above. Corridor length is the distance measured from the optical center vertically to the near zone.It is a critical feature that significantly influences the optical performance and wearer satisfaction.

    Today I would like to explain about Hoyalux iD 14 mm (long corridor)
    - It apply the principle of the Integrated Double Surface Design and New Ergonomic Inset Design
    - Personal inset is 0 to 6 mm
    - The corridor length is 14mm
    - It specify the own definition of Add Power
    - It is available in 1.53, 1.6, 1.67 both in Clear and Suntech and 1.7 Clear

    Integrated Double Surface progressive Design ensure that the progressive performance in term of function and comfort equally distributed in front and back surface.Horizontal progressive components which is on the back surface is for better 'function' and wider visual field. Vertical progressive components which is on front surface enable short interaction between far and near for better 'comfort'( relate the eyeball rotation angle between near and far).

    This Hoyalux iD 14 mm is suitable for outdoor person/activity and active person.

    14mm type is recommended

    Recommend to :
    -Get tired when looking down to see near objects

  34. Now I would like to explain on the eye point fitting guide for Hoyalux iD 14mm.
    1. take minimum 10mm from eye point to top part of the rim
    2. take 4mm from the near eye point as the Minimum Eye Point fitting
    3.take 8mm from the near eye point for full eye point fitting

    - Use the Box System for eye point fitting

    To calculate the minimum frame height for 14mm corridor is :
    =Distance eye point to top of the rim + corridor length + minimum eye point fitting
    = 10 + 14 +4
    = 28 mm

    To calculate the full frame height for 14mm is :
    = Distance eye point to top of the rim + corridor length + full eye point fitting
    = 10 + 14 +8
    =32 mm

    soft design progressive have a wider intermediate and least distortion while the hard design has a smaller design with bigger distortion.
    soft design is design for an active or sporty person.

    i would like to share a little bit about TACT200

    The Hoyalux TACT is a occupational reading progressive with emphasis on the intermediate and near range and slightly reduced distance field. It is therefore ideal for the office worker who also has an occasional need for clear distance vision. This lens is not recommended for driving.some benefits for the user are relaxed,variable depth vision and also width and depth vision without extra movements.The number '200' in the design name represent the maximum depth of vision which is 200cm.It also have adjusted fitting criteria compared to TACT400 which has normal fitting criteria.

    Sir,what do you mean by trinity (12 design)?

    Trinity lens have 3 type which are balance, mild and sharper and each type has 3 indie which are 1.60,1.67 and 1.74. In each index has 2 distance of corridor which are 11 and 14 mm. So, all of them are 18 designs.

    Why are you mention above is 12 designs? It is the design that you mention is not same with what I understand?

    I want to share about how to choose Trinity lens whether 14 mm or 11 mm corridor length.

    14mm corridor length is recommended to:
    - who are need longer time to adapt with progressive lens
    - who are sensitive with distortion

    11mm corridor length is recommended to:
    - who are get tired when looking down to see near object
    - who are take long time reading.
    - who are fist time of wearing Trinity lens because the improvement can be realized immediately.
    - who are harder reading because the smaller the eye rotation from seeing far object offers more comfortable reading.

  42. hurm hurm hurmm.. since everybody has mention about gp,fd,id,summit cd, summit pro, bla bla bla.. can i share about phoenix? it is one of the design that hoya's also have :)

    PHOENIX or in the short form is PNX. PNX is the only lens material developed to perform in all aspects of life, providing just right performance characteristics pecisely. It is for reading, computer work, driving, and any time vision acuity is important, PNX also provide crisp, clear optics that optimize corrective prescriptions and help to reduce eye strain.

    PNX is actually a lens that is comparable to polycarbonate lens material that is produced by other's lens company. PNX is lighter compare to polycarbonate.It has a higher abbe number compare to polycarbonate, which is PNX=43, POLOYCARBONATE=30-32. It is high resistance, high-strength, and high-durability. It has been proved in front of all of us during the Hoya visit, right? :) PNX also have stress-free characteristics and it is hard to be scratch compare to plastic material (CR39). :))

    Design features:
    -vertical aspheric design
    -right and left eye differentiation
    -reading position consideration
    -two types of remark : REMARK A (0.53D), REMARK B (0.88D)
    -recommended frame height: not less than 25mm
    -minimum eye point : not less than 25mm

    nani, r u sure the minimum EP for 14mm FD is 28?

    the answer should be like this:

    EP(min): 14 + 4 = 18mm

    Question 2, is it suitable for 30mm frame height?

    ans: 18 + 10 = 28 mm (minimum height).

    Full or maximum height
    = 14 + 8 + 10 = 32 mm

    Yes, it does! as long as the frame size in range of 28 mm - 32 mm.

    remember, fadilah! hoyalix trinity also available for standard frame (14mm corridor) and smaller frame (11 mm corridor). same as the other hoyalux lenses.

    Ajmal, remember this.

    TACT 200 is used for MAX intermediate distance up to 200cm while TACT 400 for maximun of 400cm intermediate distance.

    i do prefer to have TACT, if i were presbyope especially at early presbyopia.

    If, i can't affort for transition hoyalux FD, it is expensive. Can i order the tinted hoyalux FD? it 's cheaper, i quess.

    for those who are reading this. 'Lecture' is actually a brand for progressive lens from hoya. Conventional one. Don't get confused with lecture (mengajar)...lol..

    i'll recommend ADDpower to presbyope who has low ametropia at distance. They only need correction for intermediate and near. ADDpower may be helpful. don't you think so?

    same as other index, summit CD offers wide intermediate portion because it is soft design progressive lens.

    14mm is a long corridor lens. the power progression from distance correction to near correction is smoother and better as compared to the short corridor. Hence, patient will adapt well/easier with long corridor lens.

    there is no such lens amalina. All progressive lens has distortion on peripheral. Now we have latest technology that can created less distorted progressive lens. Even, the-best-Trinity has distortion but less significant.

    there are lot more. If i may....

    hard design is the first generation followed by soft design. the concept of hard design is actually to produce larger reading area but unfortunatelly it causes longer time to adapt and very tiring.

    soft design is claimed to be the most succesful design. it reduces non-tolerance and eases adaptation.

    REMARK A and B have their own specific targeted age. Do you agree with that? It is most suitable for incipient presbyope (early presbyope). At age 38 dah kena presbyope. Usually 42 tahun dan ke atas. so, you can give them REMARK!
