HOW TO CALCULATE MINIMUM SIZE UNCUT

Assalamualaikum and good morning,

Do you know about Minimum Size Uncut or MSU? Why do we need to calculate MSU?

MSU is very important information for us as clinician and Lens Company when we do lens order and edging process in Dispensing Lab... Here, I would like to share my lecture about this topic.

    PD Frame = 48mm + 15mm

    = 31.5mm

    ELD = 42mm

    Decentration, d,

    *-ve sign indicate that PD patient is bigger than PD frame.

    Minimum Size Uncut, MSU,

    RE, MSU = ELD + d

    SALAM[ANSWER]

    ELD= 19mm x 2 = 38mm
    PD Frame = 48+16

    Pt's PD = 32-32mm

    Decentration,d at RE:

    MSU for LE:

  42. For RE;
    ELD; 30 x 2 = 60mm
    Distance nasal-box centre = 34mm
    Distance nasal-patient's pupil=21mm
    Decentration ; (34 - 21)x2 = 26mm
    MSU; ELD+decentration+glazing allowance, 60+26+2 = 88mm

    The lens should be order is 85mm because the plastic full frame can be adjusted which is slightly stretch and shrunken.

    For LE;
    ELD; 30 x 2 = 60mm
    Decentration ; (34-23)x2 = 22mm
    MSU; 60+22+2 = 84mm

    In this case, the lens should be ordered is 85mm

  43. Importance of Minimum Size Uncut(MSU)

    1.to know the required minimum size of lens that will be ordered fron manufacturer.

    2.to make sure that the lens fits according to the size of spectacle design.

    3.to ensure the effective diameter of ordered lens.

    4.to ensure the ordered lens not to small and not to big to fit into the frame.

    5.to make sure when we want to cut the lens it is enough for adjustment.

    6.to certify the exact size of lens will not result in wasting as big/large uncut lens is more costly.

    7.to make certain if we need special order due to unique frame from the manufacturer.

    8.to make it easier for decentration.

    9.to make it easier to dispense using the machine.

    10.to ensure the lens ordered fits with patient's frame without having problem with pupillary distance(PD) and optical center(OC).

    Kamilatunnisak 's Answer

    ELD = double the longest radius
    = 25 x 2
    = 50 mm

    ELD+glazing allowance 2mm = 50 + 2
    = 52mm

    PD Frame = (51 + 17) / 2
    = 34 mm

    RE PD = 33 mm

    RE Decentration = PD Frame - RE PD
    = 34 - 33
    = 1 mm

    double RE decentration = 1 x 2
    = 2 mm

    RE MSU = (ELD + glazing allowance)
    + double RE decentration
    + glazing allowance 2mm
    = 52 + 2 + 2
    = 56 mm

    LE PD = 32 mm

    LE decentration = PD frame - LE PD
    = 34 - 32
    = 2 mm

    Double LE decentration = 2 x 2
    = 4 mm

    LE MSU = (ELD + glazing allowance)
    + double LE decentration
    + glazing allowance 2mm
    = 52 + 4 + 2
    =58 mm

    MSU for RE is 56 mm and LE is 58 mm. Thus, the lens size for RE and LE that should be ordered are 65 mm.

  57. sorry sir..below is latest answer for my question
    ELD: 36mm
    PD: 55mm
    Frame: 45mm + 14mm
    =59mm
    Decentration (d),
    =59mm-55mm
    =4mm (2)
    =8mm

    MSU= d+ELD+glazing allowance
    = 8mm+36mm+2mm
    =46mm
    so, the lens should be ordered is 65mm

  58. Metal Full Frame

    Longest radius = 21mm
    Patient's diameter = 64mm
    Effective Lens Diameter (ELD) = longest radius x 2
    = 21 x 2
    = 42 mm

    Decentration (D)
    = [frame size - Patient's PD]x 2
    = [(51+17) - 64]x 2
    = [68 - 64]x 2
    = 8mm (+ sign: pt's PD is smaller than the Frame's PD: decentration in)

    MSU = ELD + D + glazing allowance
    = 42 + 8 + 2
    = 52mm

    So, the lens size that should be ordered = 65mm #

    CORRECTION

    1.ELD= 19mm x 2 = 38mm
    PD Frame = 48+16
    =64mm/2 = 32mm

    Pt's PD = 32-32mm

    2.Decentration,d at RE:
    (32mm - 32mm ) x 2 = 0
    MSU for RE:
    =ELD + d
    =38mm + 0 = 38mm

    3.Decentration,d at LE:
    (32mm-32mm) x 2 = 0
    MSU for LE:
    =ELD + d
    =38mm + 0 = 38mm

    4.so, the lens size that should be ordered for RE and LE are 65mm if the lens needed is plus power. however, if the lens needed is minus power, the lens size that should be ordered is 70mm.

    correction towards for my answer:

    MSU for RE:
    =ELD + decenteration
    =48mm + 6mm
    =54mm
    (because it is rimless frame, so no need to add the glazing allowance)

    diameter lense order =
    1)if it is in the range of:

    *sph:+4.00D - -6.00D
    cyl: <-2.00D

    minus lens is 70mm
    plus lens is 65mm

    if the lens is not in the above* range both minus and plus lens is order in 65mm in diameter.

    MSU for LE:
    =ELD + decenteration
    = 48mm + 4mm

    diameter lens order same as for the RE.

    MSU = ELD + d + glazing allowance + 1mm for full plastic frame

    LE, MSU = 42mm + 1mm + 2mm + 1mm

    LE, MSU = 48mm + 25mm + 2mm + 1mm

  71. Correction:

    ELD = longest radius x 2
    30mm x 2 = 60mm
    frame PD = 54+14 = 68mm
    RE;
    decentration = (68/2)- 21
    = 13mm x 2
    = 26mm
    LE;
    decentration = (68/2)- 23
    = 11mm x 2
    = 22mm

    MSU = ELD + glazing allowance + d
    RE;
    MSU = 60 + 2 + 26
    = 88mm
    since the the frame is plastic full frame,so:
    88mm + 1mm = 89mm

    The lens size is out of uncut size range,so, we need to make special order from supplier or we can consult the customer to choose smaller frame size.

    LE;
    MSU = 60 + 2 + 22
    = 84mm
    the frame is plastic full frame,so:
    84mm + 1mm = 85mm

    The lens should be ordered is 85mm

    to cut cost as well.

    make sure we order the correct lens diameter for our patient. according to MSU.

    If our MSU is 60mm, we have to order lens with diameter of 60mm (only if the manufacturer produce this diameter), if not, you can order lens with diameter of 65mm, do not order lens with 70 or 75mm! (you can do so if only 65mm lens is not available).
    larger the diameter, the great price it will be.

    it it clear to you guys?
