Assalamualaikum and good morning,
Do you know about Minimum Size Uncut or MSU? Why do we need to calculate MSU?
MSU is very important information for us as clinician and Lens Company when we do lens order and edging process in Dispensing Lab... Here, I would like to share my lecture about this topic.

@The Traveler
ReplyDeletePD Frame = 48mm + 15mm

ELD = 42mm
Decentration, d,
RE, PD = 30mm
d = 31.5mm - 30mm

= 3.0mm
LE, PD = 32mm
d = 31.5mm - 32mm

*-ve sign indicate that PD patient is bigger than PD frame.
Minimum Size Uncut, MSU,
RE, MSU = ELD + d

LE, MSU = ELD + d

So, the lens size that should be ordered is 65mm.

Distance nasal-box centre = 34mm
Distance nasal-patient's pupil=21mm
Decentration ; (34 - 21)x2 = 26mm
MSU; ELD+decentration+glazing allowance, 60+26+2 = 88mm
The lens should be order is 85mm because the plastic full frame can be adjusted which is slightly stretch and shrunken.
For LE;
ELD; 30 x 2 = 60mm
Decentration ; (34-23)x2 = 22mm
MSU; 60+22+2 = 84mm
In this case, the lens should be ordered is 85mm
Importance of Minimum Size Uncut(MSU)
ReplyDelete1.to know the required minimum size of lens that will be ordered fron manufacturer.
2.to make sure that the lens fits according to the size of spectacle design.
3.to ensure the effective diameter of ordered lens.
4.to ensure the ordered lens not to small and not to big to fit into the frame.
5.to make sure when we want to cut the lens it is enough for adjustment.
6.to certify the exact size of lens will not result in wasting as big/large uncut lens is more costly.
7.to make certain if we need special order due to unique frame from the manufacturer.
8.to make it easier for decentration.
9.to make it easier to dispense using the machine.
10.to ensure the lens ordered fits with patient's frame without having problem with pupillary distance(PD) and optical center(OC).

ReplyDeleteRE, MSU
= ELD + d + glazing allowance
= 46mm+ 2mm + 2mm + 1mm (for full plastic frame)
= 51mm
LE, MSU
=ELD + d + glazing allowance
= 46mm + 4mm + 2mm + 1mm (for full plastic frame)
=53mm
The lens size should be ordered for both eyes is still 65mm.
@The Traveler
ReplyDeletecorrection;
Frame's PD = 51mm + 16mm
= 67mm
ELD = longest radius x 2
= 2.3cm x 2
= 23mm x 2
= 46mm
decentration (d) = (Frame's PD - Pt's PD)/2
= (67mm - 68mm)/2
= -0.5mm
= -0.5mm x 2
= -1mm (negative sign indicating pt's PD is bigger than frame's PD)
MSU (RE)= MSU (LE)
= ELD + d + glazing allowance
= 46mm + 1mm + 2mm
= 49mm
The lens size that should be ordered for each eye; LE and RE is 65mm
CORRECTION
ReplyDeleteELD =38 mm
PD = 54 mm
FRAME =45 +14
=59 mm
Decentration = 59 -54
= 5 mm
=5/2
= 2.5 x 2

MSU = ELD + Decentration + glazing
allowance
= 38 mm + 5 mm+ 2 mm
= 45 mm
Lens that should be order is 65 mm
@mimie.amer
ReplyDeletecorrection for MSU.
MSU = ELD + d + glazing allowance + 1mm for full plastic frame
so,
RE, MSU = 42mm + 3mm + 2mm + 1mm
= 48mm
LE, MSU = 42mm + 1mm + 2mm + 1mm
= 46mm
Therefore, the lens size that should be ordered for both RE and LE are 65mm.
@Amer Azme
ReplyDeletecorrection for MSU.
MSU = ELD + d + glazing allowance + 1mm for full plastic frame
so,
RE, MSU = 48mm + 27mm + 2mm + 1mm
= 78mm
LE, MSU = 48mm + 25mm + 2mm + 1mm
= 76mm
Therefore, the lens size that should be ordered for both RE and LE are 80mm.
Correction:
ReplyDeleteELD = longest radius x 2
30mm x 2 = 60mm
frame PD = 54+14 = 68mm
RE;
decentration = (68/2)- 21
= 13mm x 2
= 26mm
LE;
decentration = (68/2)- 23
= 11mm x 2
= 22mm
MSU = ELD + glazing allowance + d
RE;
MSU = 60 + 2 + 26
= 88mm
since the the frame is plastic full frame,so:
88mm + 1mm = 89mm
The lens size is out of uncut size range,so, we need to make special order from supplier or we can consult the customer to choose smaller frame size.
LE;
MSU = 60 + 2 + 22
= 84mm
the frame is plastic full frame,so:
84mm + 1mm = 85mm
The lens should be ordered is 85mm

ReplyDeleteto cut cost as well.
make sure we order the correct lens diameter for our patient. according to MSU.
If our MSU is 60mm, we have to order lens with diameter of 60mm (only if the manufacturer produce this diameter), if not, you can order lens with diameter of 65mm, do not order lens with 70 or 75mm! (you can do so if only 65mm lens is not available).
larger the diameter, the great price it will be.
it it clear to you guys?

ReplyDeletecorrection 4 MSU :
since it is a rimless frame,no need to add 2mm glazing allowance.
ELD: 48mm
MSU: ELD+ (dX2)
RE: 48mm + (3.5mm x 2) = 55mm
LE: 48mm + (0.5mm x 2) = 49mm
therefore, lens size that should be ordered is 65mm.

ReplyDeletevery clear! Thanks abg azuwan!=)
you can read further on the lens diameter available in the market. Not all manufacturers produce the same lens diameter.
ReplyDeleteCommon diameter available are 65mm, 70mm and 75mm (according to this manufacturer: ILT Optics Sdn. Bhd)
